Daguerreotype

Daguerreotype was the first publicly available photographic process, widely used during the 1840s and 1850s. "Daguerreotype" also refers to an image created through this process.

Daguerreotypes Of People From Virginia - The Gene Genie

Because I have a Daguerreotype of my ancestor, Thomas Bailey Christian, in Virginia, with his 2nd wife who is wearing a bonnet, I thought I would do an image search to see if I could learn anything. Maybe find the photographer!

Pinterest search "Daguerreotype + bonnet"

Mystery Photo Game

I am trying to start a Mystery Photo Game. The key is the right hashtags on X. My #$%&* website that I love has a period in the middle.- memory.industries - And you can't have periods in hashtags., Grrr.

I guess it is unique enough to use without the period so the hashtag will be #memoryindustries on X if you would like to try to guess the mystery.

Search X/Twitter for my Mystery Photo Game #memoryindustries

How to upscale, resize, enhance, increase resolution in Photoshop 2023

Finally figured this out so sharing it here:

Open your image. The image I chose resolution of 72.

Change the resolution to whatever you like. Here I chose 300. Next to "Resample", from the drop down menu choose Preserve Details.

You can also choose Noise Reduction if you like. Here I chose 85.

This is the final product at 100% without "Preserve Details".

This is the final product at 100% with "Preserve Details".

UPDATE 2024: I see that Leonardo.ai and Canva both have an upscale feature

Teddy Roosevelt Portrait on the Blue Blood's Frank Reagan Office Set

Where can I get a Teddy Roosevelt portrait just like the one on Blue Bloods?

I love set design. And vintage images. We do watch Blue Bloods (we are Tom Selleck fans) so, yes, I did notice that spectacular portrait of Teddy Roosevelt in Police Commissioner Frank Reagan's office.

So I found the actual print and here is how to get one of your own.

teddy roosevelt blue bloods portrait

ROLL YOUR OWN:

You can purchase a print of this image HERE size 16 x 20, the closest size to the BB image. I went shopping for a frame. I hadn't ordered a frame online in years and, wow, it has not gotten any easier. I could not find a frame website I can recommend. I usually shop at Amazon for convenience so I went there next. Finding a frame and mat was not so easy. I couldn't find one exactly like BB but I did find this gold frame:

And I did find mat in two color choices. I think the BB portrait has a creme colored mat but you could also use white.

You may want to purchase the print and take it to your local framer.

If you find a better frame or mat at Amazon please let me know. And if you can recommend an online frame shop please tell us!

BUY READY-MADE:

For people who don't have time to roll their own head over to Imagekind where you can purchase the print already matted and framed. If you purchase from Imagekind, and if you have time, please let me know what your experience was like. Thanks! Catherine

Augusta, South Carolina 120 Year Old Woman - eBay Photo

South Carolina 120 Year Old Woman - used with permission

This is a new mystery. An eBay photo shows an elderly woman and on the back is written "BREUER BLACK about 120 years old!" and"taken 13 Nov. 1920". The photograph was acquired in Augusta, South Carolina.

Is Breuer Black the woman's name? Can you find any account in newspapers of a woman reaching 120 years in the year 1920? Can you find any help in Augusta, South Carolina to help identify this image?

If we do determine that her name was Breuer Black we will create a page for her at WeRelate. In the meantime you can discuss it here.

Original eBay listing. (Note: I always ask permission to use images and info from sites where I get contest ideas. This image was used with permission.)

This mystery is part of a contest to encourage people to learn to edit at WeRelate, a free genealogy website. Read more about the contest.

Photoshelter's Lattice needs watermarks!

I can't use Photoshelter's new crowd-editing Pinterest alternative, Lattice, because I can't put my images on the Internet without a watermark and here is why:

I have an image of a nutrition label that is very popular. I know for a fact it has never sold with an extended license. It showed up in a magazine with a circulation of 1.5 million. My agency has a limit of 500,000 reproductions, after that you have to purchase an extended license. There isn't one on record. I contacted my agency - they said that because the image is available on my personal portfolio they will not contact the magazine and ask them for the extended license amount. So I am screwed on this one transaction.

I can't really afford to lose ANY sales. And I can't do anything that will make it harder for me to get compensated for future sales.

So I can't put my images on Lattice without a watermark.

Now I am really curious if anyone else feels the same way. So I started a poll.

Would you let me know how you feel about Lattice and watermarks?

Thanks,
Catherine dee Auvil

Getty Images Now Free for Blogs and Social Media

Getty Images has just announced a legal, and free option to share Getty images on websites, blogs, and social media. That is pretty shocking. I'm just going to embrace it. Can't put toothpaste back in the tube. So here is a picture of a woman walking by grafitti on a wall on March 17, 2014 in Simferopol, Ukraine by Spencer Platt. I think this is going to be fun actually. And the image links back to Getty where you can license it. This is similar to how I feel about Pinterest - as long as a pin links back to the source where you can find out how to buy a print or purchase a digital download of a high res version - then I believe Pinterest is only good for photographers.

Photoshelter Help

I've been getting really serious about adding to my portfolio at Photoshelter. And I had to draw out what goes where when you add metadata like headline, title, description. I have a Beam website because I want my website to be smart phone compatible. I am pretty happy with it so far. I made a graphic and I am sharing it here. The more people who are successful at Photoshelter the better for me, I figure. Clicking the picture will bring up a larger, more readable size.

The one tip I want to pass on is that you should keep the file extension for the name of your image. I know, it doesn't look that great, but I found out the hard way that if you take it off, when the client downloads the image they will have to re-name it in order to see it and some clients will not know how to do this. Who has time for that?!

If you have any problems at Photoshelter, customer service is great. You may have the first reaction to post on the forums for help but they are not very active and you may feel frustrated with no responses. Just call customer service - they have always been great for me. I've been with Photoshelter since the beginning.

One last thing - If you sign up with Photoshelter would you consider using my referral link? Thank you! Catherine

Buy This at Allposters.com
I've always liked this photograph of Grand Central Station with the sunbeams through the windows. I found out that it's hard to tell who the photographer was. One image has a stamp "Photograph by Hal Morey of the N.Y. Central R.R." but there is controversy whether that is accurate. Here's a good blog post about the subject. You can purchase a print from Allposters.com or from the New York Transit Museum.
